Developing good habits can be hard at first, but as with anything else in life, it can be developed and maintained through perseverance.
If you have a hard time sticking to the good habits, let these tips be your guide.
Ever wondered why so many people don’t stick to their New Year’s resolutions? It’s because they bite off more than they can chew.
Committing to making BIG changes and adopting too many good habits all at once becomes overwhelming and leads us to quit sooner than we anticipated. To avoid this, start by committing to one big habit. Resolve to develop this one habit, and you are more likely to stick to it. Once accomplished, you can move on to the next.
Jotting down your thoughts and habits you hope to achieve helps you remember them more often. Don’t stop there. Write down the habit you are developing on a post-it note and paste it somewhere you look every day. This can be on your desk at work, your mirror at home or in your phone. However, writing is not enough, which brings us to the next tip…
Set an alarm that goes off every day to remind you of your new habit. For example, if you want to eat healthy, set alarms an hour ahead of your meal times to remind you make healthy choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Want to attend the gym every day? Set a reminder on your phone that will remind you of your gym appointment. By practicing your habit everyday, very soon you will be doing it at your own accord without the need for reminders.
At the end of each week, evaluate your progress and honestly assess yourself. Track your progress and celebrate how far you’ve come. Don’t be in a rush and forget to celebrate your victories no matter how small they may be. Once you have maintained a new habit for a month, pick up your next habit.
You are the sole navigator of your life, and everything you wish to achieve is only a matter of sheer dedication, willpower and unbreakable commitment. We wish you the best of luck!
