Many of us believe there’s a divine decree at work, running everything behind the scenes. Others believe in the power of the universe and a higher power, not necessarily divine. There are still those who believe in none of this and think everything is the result of science, nature and social order.
Regardless of what your belief system might be, it’s important to recognize the distinct boundary between luck, fate, chance and action. A lot of things that happen to us are out of our hands. We have no control over them and can’t say or do much to prevent or reverse them. There are other things, though, that we need to take ownership of.
Take charge of your life for reasons as simple as:
Controlling your emotions is nothing short of an achievement. If you’re able to rein those in, you’re halfway there. Not letting your emotions interfere with your ability to persevere is one of the most difficult things you can ever do for yourself, and it’s a matter of perspective. Controlling is not the same as repression, however. Distinguishing between both of these states is instrumental in the long-term trajectory of your life.
It’s as simple as this. If you’re not the one steering the wheel, there will be no shortage of people who will. From parents to partners, everyone will want to be an expert on how you live your life. You can’t please them all, and you can’t expect to live your life on their terms either. At some point, you’ll break, and that could be the point of no return. It’s crucial to your sense of self and self-belief that you take charge of your own destiny.
Even if you’re not sure of the exact address you’re meant to reach, when you take control, you develop a sense of direction for where you want to head. This direction is truly unique to you, and it might be a lonely road sometimes, but it will be your road. If it leads you to success, it will be yours to claim. If not, it’s a path you’ve paved for others to learn from like a true trailblazer.
The feeling of self-satisfaction can’t be verbalized no matter how hard we try. It’s a sense of ownership and a feeling of pride that comes with knowing that you’ve made it, that you’re here and that you’re the captain of your own ship. There isn’t anyone else who can take away your achievement from you or appreciate your success as much as you.
